Commercial Crabbers have to sort their catch, and we will pull a trap and separate the females and then we have to figure out 1’s and 2’s.
Number 1’s are typically 6 ¼ inches long from tip to tip. Number 2’s are 5 1/4 to 6 1/4 inches from tip to tip.
Soft shell crab means the crab has just shed their shell. Females will shed anywhere from 18 to 20 times or until they reach sexual maturity, and will stop growing at that time. The process of crab shedding its shell is called Molting.
Female crabs will only mate with a male one time in their life and they will store their partner’s genes in sacks and will sponge several times from that one encounter from that male crab.
Male crabs will shed their shell 21 to 23 times, but unlike females, males will continue to grow their entire life span. They can get as big or a lil’ bigger than 9 inches from tip to tip.
Crabs have super powers… well kinda! Certain types of crab like stone crab and blue crab can grow their claws back. That process is called Autonomy/Regeneration.
One thing about Blue Colla, he ain't scared of drivin'!

When it comes to recipes, there’s a science behind the madness..no, no, there is NOT! Haha, You just figure out what spice you like, and roll with it!
Shrimp only take one minute in boiling water. So, what you gonna do is get a pot and fill it a little over halfway with water. Turn the heat on, and let it start boiling. Throw in your favorite spice and make it muddy! C’mon now! That’s how we describe it down in the South. Get that water mixture going, and then throw ‘em in!
Wait exactly one minute, and you will start to see them float to the top. Turn the heat off and throw some ice in. Let ‘em soak for ten minutes and pull them out. People will say ‘Oh no, they are still cooking.’ I say nope- they are not cooking anymore. They’re good and ready to roll!
Crab takes 7-8 minutes to cook in boiling water. Follow the same steps as shrimp. Just don’t throw ice in. You wanna let them water pimps soak in hot water. They need to soak a lil longer- about 15-25 min.

Legacy and Traditions
As a kid, I spent a lot of time growing up at my grandfather’s house and on the river waterways in Richmond Hill. He taught me life lessons I will never forget. How to weld, how to shoot skeet, and how to hunt. But most of all he taught me how to go crabbing. We would go crabbing a couple of times every other week. He would have crab boils and low-country boils at his house every weekend. And all the neighborhood guys would come over in the evening and have cocktail hour. Or “tea time,” some would say. My Grandfather, Jimmy, was a big entertainer. And living on the water, that’s in our blood.
We would go out and get crabs just to give out to local neighborhood friends who wanted some. He just loved being on the water. And I would always ask to come along and watch him and his beloved best friend and next-door neighbor of 30 years, Mr. Bobby Tuten, roll in the crabs and manage the waters.
I started going when I was 6 years old. As time went on, I not only watched but pulled traps and operated the boat. Then I started to cook as well. In 2022, my grandfather passed away, and it hit me hard. I ended up inheriting his commercial crab license. I knew he wanted me in that river crabbing and carrying on our traditions. So here I am, ready to continue the legacy and share it with ya’ll. Welcome to Blue Colla Crabba.
"You're always welcome in my kitchen, James."
